Wes has this to say about Microsoft.
Most I.T. people will agree with her opinion of 8.1. Although, many won’t agree that we need to go as far back as XP to find the last stable version of windows. Windows 7 is the last very stable O.S. that Microsoft put out. Most of the bugs have been worked out and it has many user friendly features while still having a similar interface to XP. Many of the systems utilities are found the same way.
The always online feature is also a bone of contention. She has a good point there. Also if people need cloud storage, there are several third party ones that are a lot less buggy, like Google drive.
Yes, right now all tech companies are trying to get more and more info on individuals to sell for targeted marketing, but I think it is a little tin foil hat thinking to say they would use your finger prints to do so. The finger print scanner is just a hardware feature to give people a sense that a device is more secure than it really is. It can still be bypassed via a password. It’s just another gadget they threw in to entice people to buy new computers and tablets. The only info that Microsoft wants to sell is your gender, age, search interests and online shopping habits.
All in all, Microsoft goes through a cycle before they get it right. Apparently they must make a crappy OS before the can make a solid one. aka, see this list.
- Windows 3.1 – solid 8 bit
- Windows 95 – very buggy and glitchy with new 16 bit processing
- Windows 98 first edition – not as buggy but not there yet.
- Windows 98 second edition – solid 16 bit O.S.
- Windows Millennium edition (aka: Windows ME) – the Red headed step child of O.S.’s. The first time they tried 32 bit operations and it sucked.
- Windows 2000/XP – Very Solid and proof that 32 Bit operations can work and work well.
- Windows Vista – back to crap. This was the first 64 bit O.S. and had way too many issues with security settings and prompts. Not to mention it was a system resource Hog!
- Windows 7 – SOLID, and proof of a pattern of screwing up then learning from it. kept all of the good new features of vista with improvements on all the failings. Also proved you can run 64 bit operations without using all your systems resources to just idle.
- Windows 8 & 8.1 – back to screwing up. but it does have one redeeming quality in that it is a leaner running operating system. 8/8.1 Requires half the power and performance that 7 did. It’s purely the interface they screwed up this time. So if they can fix that with the next incarnation, like the pattern shows, they will have another Solid O.S.
Again, all in all, it’s only a matter of time before they get it right. No need to go all the way back to XP when 7 is solid to, and all is need to weather the 8/8.1 storm is some patients. The pattern shows they eventually get it right.
Thank you Wes Sneed Jr. for insight, you hit the nail squarely on the head.
